Season 21 of NCIS Brings a Game-Changing Twist for McGee, Reveals Sean Murray

“NCIS” may not typically be synonymous with groundbreaking plot twists, but Season 21 is gearing up to deliver a substantial surprise to Timothy McGee (Sean Murray). In the episode titled “The Plan,” McGee finds his world turned upside down after his wife, Delilah (Margo Harshman), convinces him to undergo a DNA test to support her genealogy hobby. The results reveal an unexpected relative, catapulting McGee into a whirlwind of emotions and curiosity.

Sean Murray shared with TV Insider his reaction to this storyline, expressing both shock and intrigue at the development. “It definitely threw me for a loop, but it’s a rabbit hole he can’t resist exploring,” Murray commented. The identity of this mysterious relative remains under wraps, but Murray is eager to delve into the narrative possibilities this discovery presents for his character. He has been vocal about the importance of character evolution, refusing to let McGee stagnate. “I’ve always been clear that McGee needs to grow; he can’t be static. I’m glad our creative team agrees,” he stated.

Over the years, McGee has indeed shown significant growth, notably in his interactions with his sister, Sarah (Troian Bellisario), whose future on the show has sparked curiosity. Despite the absence of Sarah from recent seasons, Murray hinted at a potential return, inspired by a recent discussion with Bellisario, his real-life stepsister. “Troian and I were just speculating about what’s next for Sarah. It’s all up in the air, but it’s an exciting thought,” he revealed, touching on his family connection to Donald P. Bellisario, NCIS’s creator.

Season 21 of “NCIS” takes a new direction with its storytelling, focusing on character-driven narratives. Murray teased upcoming episodes that explore Timothy and Delilah’s domestic life, including plans to renovate their apartment—previously owned by Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly)—and Delilah’s playful attempt to persuade McGee to shave his goatee through a colleagues’ poll. These storylines promise to add depth and humor to the lives of the beloved characters as the series, one of 2023’s top prime-time shows, continues to captivate audiences with its return on March 25.
