Discover the Filming Location of ‘Yellowstone’: Experience Chief Joseph Ranch, the Real Dutton Family Homestead

Believe it or not, the breathtaking landscapes serving as the backdrop for the Dutton family’s saga in “Yellowstone” are filmed at a genuine location – the Chief Joseph Ranch in Darby, Montana.

For those engrossed in the riveting narrative of John Dutton on “Yellowstone,” you might wonder if the Duttons are drawn from real life. The truth is, they aren’t a real family, but they’re not entirely fictional either. Taylor Sheridan, the series creator, has crafted the Duttons by drawing inspiration from the experiences of multiple families in Montana and Wyoming, facing real-world challenges.

“These issues of land development, resource mismanagement, oppression, and extreme poverty, and inequity in government exist everywhere,” Sheridan remarked in a 2018 Los Angeles Times article. He pointed out that such issues hit harder in smaller, rural communities, making the impact of modern development on traditional landscapes more stark and dramatic.

The Chief Joseph Ranch isn’t just a filming set; it’s a working cattle ranch and a family residence that also offers a slice of “Yellowstone” to fans through cabin rentals.

The ranch has two cabins available for guests: The Fisherman Cabin, also known as Lee Dutton’s cabin, and The Ben Cook Cabin, featured as Rip’s cabin in Season 1 and Kayce’s in Season 2. Each cabin can accommodate up to eight guests. Rentals are possible only when “Yellowstone” isn’t filming.

Lee Dutton’s cabin is equipped with a king-size bed in the master bedroom, a full bathroom, a living room, a kitchen, and a screened-in porch on the main level. The upper level has two queen-size beds, another full bathroom, and a loft with two twin beds, available at $1,400 per night for four guests (maximum of 8 guests).

Rip’s cabin offers three queen-size beds, two twin beds, two full bathrooms, a kitchen, a living room, and two porches, priced at $1,700 per night for four guests (maximum of 8 guests).

These guest cabins are open for bookings from March to the first week of January. Due to the ranch’s dual role in hosting “Yellowstone” filming and guests, available dates tend to fill up fast.
