NCIS Season 21: Return of Original Character Met with Disappointing Future Update
Season 21 of NCIS brought a deeply moving moment for fans with a special episode dedicated to Ducky, which also saw the comeback of a beloved original character. However, the joy of this return was tinged with the somber news regarding their continued involvement with the show.
In an emotionally charged season, the NCIS team grappled with the poignant loss of Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard, who passed away peacefully in his sleep. This storyline paid homage to the actor David McCallum, who passed away in 2023, through the heartfelt episode titled “The Stories We Leave Behind.” The tribute extended beyond the current team, involving past colleagues who came together to honor his enduring impact.
Fans had speculated that Ducky’s dear friend Gibbs might reappear for this significant episode. However, Season 21, Episode 2 surprised viewers by bringing back Michael Weatherly’s character, Tony DiNozzo, instead. DiNozzo’s appearance, particularly towards the episode’s conclusion, showcased his lasting bonds with team members like Palmer and McGee. Despite this heartwarming reunion, Brian Dietzen revealed in a recent USA Today interview that Weatherly’s cameo is a standalone appearance, dashing hopes for his regular return to the series.
“(Michael) was eager to help out with what was essentially an in-person flashback. It was a shoutout to the previous iterations of this ‘NCIS’ team as Michael too was an original cast member. But there are no plans for a return.”
This revelation is particularly disheartening given Weatherly’s own expressed desire to dive back into DiNozzo’s world on NCIS. Following the conclusion of his leading role on Bull, Weatherly indicated his readiness and eagerness to explore more of DiNozzo’s narrative, hinting at untold stories he’s keen to delve into, provided the opportunity arises.
Although Weatherly’s immediate future on NCIS may not involve a full-scale comeback, there’s still a glimmer of hope for fans wishing to see DiNozzo again. With the series approaching its landmark 1000th episode, it would be fitting for him to play a part in the celebration, especially considering his foundational role in the NCIS legacy. This upcoming milestone presents a perfect opportunity for the show to revisit its roots and potentially include Weatherly in its grand celebration, making up for the absence of such nostalgic returns in its 20th season.
