NCIS: Origins’ Casts Austin Stowell as the Young Version of Mark Harmon’s Iconic Character, Gibbs

Stowell has snagged the coveted lead role in “NCIS: Origins,” a CBS prequel series dedicated to exploring the early days of the character famously portrayed by Mark Harmon in the original NCIS series, according to EW.

Set in the 1990s, specifically in 1991, this latest addition to the NCIS franchise will delve into the beginnings of Gibbs’ career. Viewers will follow a young Gibbs as he embarks on his journey as a fresh special agent at the nascent NCIS Camp Pendleton office, quickly establishing his presence on an unrefined, diverse team under the guidance of the legendary Mike Franks.

At 39, Stowell brings a rich portfolio to the role, with notable performances alongside Lucy Hale in the romantic comedy “The Hating Game,” an adaptation of the bestselling novel. His impressive range of TV and movie credits includes roles in “A Friend of the Family,” “Breathe,” “Catch-22,” “Bridge of Spies,” “Battle of the Sexes,” “12 Strong,” “Whiplash,” and “Colossal.”

Mark Harmon, who stepped away from NCIS early in its 19th season, is set to make a comeback within the franchise. He will lend his voice as the narrator for “Origins” and will also serve as an executive producer, alongside his son Sean Harmon, who has previously portrayed a young Gibbs on screen. The show will be co-run and executive produced by Gina Lucita Monreal and David J. North, both of whom have a decade of writing experience on NCIS, with North currently holding a co-showrunner and executive producer position on the original series.

“NCIS: Origins” has received a direct-to-series order for the 2024-2025 broadcast season, promising to offer fans a unique glimpse into the backstory of one of television’s most enduring characters.
