A 17-Year-Old Shelter Dog Finds Family and Lives to Meet His Human Sibling
Beth and Michael Clark, known for their compassionate work, often donate blankets to animal shelters during winter to ensure comfort and warmth for dogs without families.
However, a visit to Anne Arundel County Animal Control in December 2015 changed more than just their donation routine. They returned home not only with supplies but with an unexpected new family member.
The couple couldn’t resist the forlorn gaze of a 17-year-old dog named Rocky, who looked so sad that leaving him behind wasn’t an option.
“I saw this gray-faced, skinny dog and I said to my husband, ‘We’re getting him,’” Beth shared with Today. “I couldn’t let that old man die alone in a cage.”
Beth reflected on their time with Rocky, saying, “Rocky made our life very complete. He loved dancing with us and being close. As time passed, climbing stairs and taking walks became difficult, so my husband carried him up the stairs every night so he could sleep next to us. We spent our time sitting in the sun together instead of walking.”
Robin Catlett, an administrator at Anne Arundel County Animal Control, noted that more families are now open to adopting senior dogs.
“It takes a special family to open their heart and home to an animal that they may only have for a short time,” Robin said. “While we strive to make animals comfortable in our care, it’s never the same as a forever home.”
Beth was ecstatic when she discovered she was pregnant. As her pregnancy progressed, Rocky became increasingly gentle with her, serving as a source of support for the Maryland mom-to-be.
The Clarks even used Rocky in their pregnancy announcement, with a sign above him reading, “Mom and Dad are getting me a human!”
But at seven months pregnant, Beth faced the heartbreaking reality that Rocky’s health was deteriorating, and they were informed that their beloved senior dog might have a tumor.
When Beth and Michael brought their newborn daughter home, Rocky lovingly sniffed her and rested his head near hers. Sadly, his condition worsened, and the Clarks knew it was time to say goodbye.
“I called a vet, and that night, he passed peacefully with his family by his side,” Beth told Today. “We loved him more than words can describe, and adjusting to life without him has been incredibly hard.”
The Clarks believe that Rocky held on just long enough to meet his new human sister.
