Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2: Release Date, Upcoming Spin-Offs, and More Details
A recent report from Puck, a Hollywood insider newsletter, in early February reveals that Yellowstone stars Kelly Reilly (Beth Dutton), Cole Hauser (Rip Wheeler), and Luke Grimes (Kayce Dutton) are engaged in intense negotiations to join the cast of the upcoming Yellowstone spin-off series. While it was previously known that certain Yellowstone actors were under consideration for the new series, potentially alongside Matthew McConaughey as a lead, this report marks the first mention of specific names.
The continuation of these actors into the spin-off hinges on whether Paramount+ is willing to meet their reported salary expectations. According to Puck, Reilly and Hauser are seeking around $1.2 million per episode, with Reilly initially aiming for $1.5 million before lowering her request. Grimes’s salary expectations are reportedly less. Paramount+ faces a significant decision regarding these salary negotiations.
Paramount has declared that Yellowstone will conclude with its fifth season. This announcement, made in early May 2023, originally set the final episodes to premiere in November 2023, with an untitled sequel series slated for a December debut. However, due to delays caused by writers and actors strikes, Season 5’s return has been pushed to November 2024.
Speculation about Kevin Costner’s involvement in the remainder of Season 5 had been rife for months, especially following a report suggesting Costner might exit the show after Season 5, prior to the announcement of the final season. The extent of Costner’s participation in the concluding episodes remains uncertain. Yet, in a revealing interview with The Hollywood Reporter in June, creator Taylor Sheridan expressed that despite adjustments, the envisioned ending for the series—and for Costner’s character—remains intact. Sheridan highlighted ongoing negotiations for additional scenes with Costner to ensure his character’s storyline is properly concluded, albeit in a potentially condensed form.
“I’m disappointed,” Sheridan conveyed, noting the impact on the character’s closure, “It truncates the closure of his character. It doesn’t alter it, but it truncates it.”
This does not imply a shortened final season, however. Originally intended to be a six-episode second part of Season 5, Sheridan suggested the possibility of expansion, telling The Hollywood Reporter, “If I think it takes 10 episodes to wrap it up, [Paramount Network will] give me 10. It’ll be as long as it needs to be.”
Amid these developments, Paramount has announced a new contemporary series titled 2024, envisioned as a follow-up to Yellowstone, with Matthew McConaughey rumored to take the lead. Sheridan has hinted that this series may explore a different setting from the original show, marking a new chapter in the Yellowstone universe.
