Retired Police Dog Overjoyed to See Handler After Years Apart
K9 units are truly remarkable. These dogs provide invaluable service to police departments, making a profound impact on their human colleagues and forming unbreakable bonds.
In many cases, K9s and other working dogs live with their handlers after retirement, enjoying their golden years with someone they already love and trust. However, the Xichuan Police explain that their officers lack the time to care for retired dogs, so these loyal animals are placed with loving families instead.
It’s heartbreaking that these dedicated partners have to part ways after forging such strong connections on the job. Nevertheless, one video reveals that this wasn’t the end of their story. The footage shows a police dog appearing to cry upon being reunited with his former handler after years apart.
This touching video, posted by the Xichuan Police Department on a Chinese social media platform, features Wangwang, an 8-year-old German shepherd who served as a sniffer dog before retiring in June 2019, as reported by Daily Star.
Although Wangwang enjoyed a well-deserved retirement, it meant being separated from her beloved handler. She missed him dearly, so when the officer made a surprise visit after a long time, her joy was palpable. She sprinted towards him, clearly overjoyed.
The reunion was heartwarming. The officer lovingly rubbed and petted Wangwang, who seemed to be shedding tears of happiness, overwhelmed by the emotional encounter.
Despite the time and distance, the bond between the officer and Wangwang remained strong. “Wangwang’s hair is turning white, but she is well-fed and getting chubby,” the video caption noted.
“It is always hard to bid farewell to your buddy.”
While many K9s and other working dogs get to live with their handlers after retirement, spending their golden years with someone they already love and trust, the Xichuan Police note that their officers do not have the time to look after retired dogs. Instead, these faithful companions are cared for by loving families.
It’s sad that Wangwang and her handler had to part ways after forming such a strong bond on the job. However, seeing Wangwang’s joyful reaction, it’s clear this wasn’t the last visit the officer made to his old friend.
