Rottweiler mom and her pups rescued after surviving days of wildfire chaos

A mother dog and her four puppies were finally rescued after spending days trapped in a car, as residents fled a massive wildfire.

Last week, Northern California was ravaged by the Park Fire, a devastating blaze believed to be caused by arson. The fire has scorched over 380,000 acres, making it the fifth-largest wildfire in California’s history.

Thousands of residents across four counties were forced to evacuate. One Butte County resident had to abandon their truck in a remote area as they fled, leaving behind two adult rottweilers and their four puppies.

With the fire raging, there was no way to reach the dogs, who remained trapped in the truck for days. Once the area was deemed safe, two members of the Butte County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue team took it upon themselves to save the animals.

According to a statement from the department, BCSO member Trevor Skaggs and pilot Conner Smith flew into the disaster zone. Trevor then sprinted 1.5 miles to the truck where the dogs were trapped. Sadly, the male adult dog, the puppies’ father, had perished, but the mother and her four puppies were still alive.

The dogs were exhausted and dehydrated, so Trevor gave them water and some bites from a protein bar. He then guided them back to the helicopter, and the pilot flew them to Chico Airport, where they were cared for by the North Valley Animal Disaster Group.

The Park Fire has left a trail of destruction: 192 structures have been destroyed, and countless residents are uncertain if their homes have survived.

Yet, amid the devastation, the rescue of these dogs offers a beacon of hope. Their survival is a rare bit of good news in the midst of this disaster.

“It’s been a horrific few days for our community, and we are grateful to share this remarkable story,” the Butte County Sheriff’s Office said.

The fire is now 14% contained, and the suspected arsonist has been apprehended. Firefighters and emergency personnel continue to battle the blaze and assist those affected.
